The SEW-Arts Framework

 

Enhancing the social and emotional wellbeing of young people in arts programs

The SEW-Arts framework was developed by researchers in conversation with young people engaged in the arts, their parents, and artists from various arts organisations across a range of art forms such as dance, drama, visual art, music, and circus. 

 

The SEW-Arts framework helps arts organisations to intentionally promote the

social and emotional wellbeing (SEWB) of young people through their programs.

The SEW-Arts Framework comprises three distinct modules tailored to different roles within the arts community. Modules 1 and 2 are curated for Teaching Artists, while Module 3 is crafted specifically for arts administrators.

Module1: SEW-Arts Wellbeing Factors

In Module 1, you will delve into the SEW-Arts Wellbeing Factors. 


Module 1 is structured for a gradual exploration of various Wellbeing Factors, allowing participants to delve into specific aspects over an extended timeframe rather than completing the entire Module at once. By utilising the SEW-Arts Teaching Artist survey, individuals can pinpoint the Wellbeing Factors most pertinent to their practice. It is recommended to complete the survey before embarking on Module 1. Depending on the chosen focus areas, dedicating approximately an hour to review and plan for each Wellbeing Factor is advised. Additionally, Module 1 encourages collaborative engagement, facilitating group discussions on key messages and questions.


Module 1 is designed for teaching artists and arts professionals.

Module 2: SEWB Pedagogies

In Module 2, you will explore social and emotional wellbeing pedagogies.


Similarly, Module 2 offers flexibility in its approach. Participants are encouraged to assess their teaching methods against a list of SEWB pedagogies, identifying those already integrated into their practice and those warranting further attention. To ensure depth of exploration, it's recommended to focus on one or two SEWB pedagogies at a time, with the option to revisit the module as confidence grows. Completion of Module 2 typically requires around half an hour.

Module 3: SEW-Arts Map the Gap Tool

In Module 3, you will investigate the four categories of the SEW-Arts Map the Gap Tool.


Designed exclusively for arts administrators, Module 3 provides insights into organisational structures and operations. This Module, approximately an hour in duration, prompts administrators to assess current practices within their organisations. Utilising the 'Map the Gap' tool, accessible through Module 3, facilitates the identification of focus areas for organisational improvement.
